The RDNS Education Centre is offering free training to all nurses/trainers working in Residential Aged Care Facilities in metropolitan and regional South Australia throughout 2010.

The Better Oral Health in Residential Care project is a national program and aims to provide increased awareness of oral hygiene issues for the staff in daily contact with residents in aged care facilities.

This face to face workshop is available to two aged care staff (minimum 1 RN) using the train the trainer format. Resource kits, training materials and post workshop support via telephone, email and an online forum will be provided to participants so they can train and support other facility staff to enhance the oral hygiene and health of all residents.

The three workshop modules are:

  • Module 1:

Good Oral Health is Essential for Healthy Ageing – oral health assessment and care plan, daily oral hygiene and dental treatment
  • Module 2:

Protect your Residents’ Oral Health – care of natural teeth and dentures, hands on module and DVD ‘Dental rescue’
  • Module 3:

It takes a Team Approach to Maintain a Healthy Mouth – new residents, changed behaviours, follow up oral health assessment and treatment.

In addition to the workshop the Aged Care Channel will feature a complimentary oral health program to be aired in June 2010. This will provide its members with an opportunity to reinforce learned knowledge.
